Mama and Jessie are spending their last night together as Jessie has plans to kill herself by the end of the night.  Throughout the night she gathers towels, bullets and a gun, and places them in her room.  She also helps prepare Mama for life without her by telling her where everything is in the house as well as what to tell everyone else.  Mama tries desperately to stop Jessie but Jessie's mind is already made up.  At the end of the evening, after a more conversational night then the two had ever had, Jessie leaves for her room.  Mama struggles to keep her but Jessie breaks free and enters her room.  Mama screams pleading with Jessie and then hears the gunshot.  She gets up, distraught, and picks up the phone to call her son.  The last lines said are, "Loretta, let me talk to Dawson, honey."
